Why we need to RETHINK the way we build the web - The start of a journey into 'Responsible Web Development'

Have you ever thought about how much energy a website uses — or whether everyone can access and use it easily? - Most people haven’t.
But the truth is, the internet has a bigger impact on the planet than you might think.

That’s why freelance digital designer Daniel Kongsted Petersen and Claudia Erdem, our Senior Digital Consultant for Sustainability at Digital Thinking, teamed up to explore what Responsible Web Development really means.

Over this blog series, they’ll share what they’ve learned — and how we can all build digital products that are better for both people and the planet.

When Claudia first joined Digital Thinking, Daniel asked her a simple but powerful question: “What does a Digital Consultant for Sustainability actually do?”
At the time, her answer was a bit vague. She had just started digging into the topic of digital sustainability — a big, complex area. As she explored more, she discovered many related concepts: Green coding, sustainable web design, eco-friendly hosting, and reducing digital waste.
After months of research, events, and insightful conversations, Claudia and Daniel decided to join forces and bring attention to all these ideas under one name: Responsible Web Development.

It’s not just about energy use. It’s also about accessibility. - For example, can someone with a visual impairment use your website easily? - Can someone with limited data still access your content?
These are some of the important questions Claudia and Daniel will explore throughout this series. They’ll also share practical tips and real examples of how small design and development decisions can lead to more sustainable digital experiences.
Want to start small? - Try this: Switch your phone to dark mode. It may seem minor, but on many devices, especially OLED screens, it saves energy. It’s a simple step toward a more sustainable digital life.
So, whether you're a designer, developer, marketer — or just curious — stay with us. You don’t need to be an expert. This series is here to inspire, inform, and make responsible digital choices easier for everyone.
